Global milk powder markets have rarely been straightforward, but mid-2026 has delivered an unusually compressed cycle of decline, rally, correction and partial recovery — all within a matter of weeks. For importers, distributors and food manufacturers sourcing skimmed milk powder (SMP) or whole milk powder (WMP), understanding where prices stand and why they moved there is essential for managing procurement risk and protecting margins.
Where Prices Stand: The 22 July 2026 GDT Snapshot

The most recent Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction, held on 22 July 2026, delivered the first positive price reading since May — a welcome signal after several weeks of weakness. The headline GDT index rose +1.5%, with 167 bidders and 117 winners participating.
SMP averaged US$3,234/MT, up +2.8% from the prior auction. The near-term August contract settled even higher at US$3,341/MT. WMP came in at US$3,486/MT, also firmer on the event. This partial recovery followed a significant pullback on 7 July, when SMP fell -7.0% and WMP dropped -4.4% — a reminder that the current market environment rewards close attention to individual auction outcomes rather than assumed directional trends.
For context, SMP prices at current levels sit roughly 23% above the 2024 lows of approximately US$2,640/MT, but they have pulled back meaningfully from the peaks reached in the early-2026 rally, when SMP surged +10.6% in a single January auction to reach US$2,874/MT before climbing further through the spring.
The Road Here: A Volatile 18 Months

To make sense of today's prices, it helps to track the recent trajectory. Heading into late 2025, global dairy commodity markets were under sustained pressure. The December 2025 GDT auction — the ninth consecutive decline — saw the overall index fall -4.4%, with WMP down -5.7% to a EUR-denominated average of €2,843/MT. The driver was straightforward: structural milk surplus. EU and UK milk production posted its strongest growth since 2017 in October 2025, US output surged, and New Zealand set new milk solids records across the May–September 2025 season.
2026 then opened with a sharp reversal. A +6.3% jump on 6 January was followed by a further +6.7% surge later in the month, with buyers apparently re-entering on the view that the supply glut had been priced in. That momentum has since moderated, leaving the market in a state of elevated two-way volatility rather than a clear directional trend.
Regional signals are mixed. North America and Asia-Pacific saw SMP price declines in Q1 2026, reflecting lower production costs and ample inventories, while Europe saw gains on tighter stock availability. China — a critical demand reference for global dairy — recorded a quarter-on-quarter decline in its SMP price index in Q1 2026, a cautionary demand-side signal worth monitoring.
